Processor, DSP or FPGA?

All image processing tasks have in common that a substantial flow of picture data needs to be arranged with the methods of signal processing. But
often it is difficult to decide what the best system architecture might be. Is for exmple a DSP or an FPGA the best choice? How does the decision affects the price and performance of the final product?
